Since 1951, Anderson Paint has been helping Ann Arbor bring color home. What began as a small varnish shop purchased by William B. Anderson has grown into a trusted, family-owned paint store known for quality products, expert advice, and personalized service.
Three generations later, brothers Robert Jr. and Tony Anderson continue the legacy their grandfather started — serving homeowners, contractors, and designers with the same dedication to color and customer service.
From our early downtown roots to our spacious Stadium Boulevard showroom, Anderson Paint has always been about more than paint — it’s about helping people create spaces they love.

What started in 1951 as a small varnish shop in downtown Ann Arbor has grown into one of Michigan’s most trusted names in paint and design. When William B. Anderson purchased the Pontiac Varnish Company and renamed it Anderson Paint, he built the business on a simple belief — that every customer deserves exceptional products, honest pricing, and friendly, expert guidance.
That philosophy carried forward through generations. William’s son, Robert D. Anderson, Sr., joined the company in 1958 and expanded its reach, moving from the original Washington Street location to a larger, architect-designed storefront on West William. With that growth came a loyal customer base and a reputation for service that felt personal — because it was.
Today, the third generation, Robert Jr. and Tony Anderson, continue to lead the family business with the same values their grandfather started with. Anderson Paint remains family-owned, locally rooted, and committed to helping customers transform their spaces with color and confidence.
Anderson Paint has continued to grow alongside the community it serves.
In 1999, we welcomed Ann Arbor Paint & Wallpaper, formerly owned by Richard Worden, into the Anderson Paint family. Today it continues as our Washtenaw Avenue store, carrying on its long tradition of quality service on the east side of town.
In 2007, we opened our Stadium Boulevard headquarters, a spacious 9,000-square-foot paint store and warehouse designed to serve homeowners, contractors, and designers with ease.
